"On-going research, training and collaborative projects are pivotal to enhancing the palliative and hospice care field in Lebanon as well as raising awareness within the community."

IN ADDITION TO ITS ROLE IN ADVOCATING FOR PALLIATIVE CARE AND SENSITIZING THE COMMUNITY TO NORMALIZE IT AS A HEALTH RIGHT FOR EVERY PATIENT, SANAD ENVISIONS ITSELF PLAYING A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE IN ENHANCING ACCESS TO PALLIATIVE CARE. BEYOND THE PROVISION OF ITS CLINICAL SERVICES, SANAD HAS BEEN SHARING ITS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN PALLIATIVE AND HOSPICE CARE WITH OTHER HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS IN LEBANON AND THE REGION TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES AND BUILD THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS.

This unit comprises professionals from public health and nursing backgrounds. The unit’s objectives are to:

  • Maintain high quality care through setting and reviewing standards of practice and policies, and adopting and monitoring quality indicators aligned with international palliative care guidelines and recommendations and implementing quality improvement projects accordingly.

  • Assist other external entities in establishing palliative or hospice care services.

  • Conducting research in palliative and hospice care to generate knowledge that can help inform practice, policies and advocacy efforts

  • Advocating for palliative and hospice care on multiple levels within policy-making spheres and amongst healthcare professionals and communities.


  • The efforts of the Quality, Research and Development Unit have been instrumental in positioning SANAD as an advocate for palliative and hospice care in both Lebanon and the region, while simultaneously supporting other entities to develop their own palliative care services and running training and capacity building programs that help tangibly increase access to palliative and hospice care.

     

    Service Development

    Through this type of projects SANAD aims at technically supporting other healthcare organizations or institutions to establish their own hospital or home-based palliative/hospice care service models via a systematic process: (1) assessing the situation and the need for the service model, (2) developing the components of the service model, (3) delivering a theoretical and practical training to the new team and (4) piloting and evaluating the service.

    Capacity building

    Through this type of projects, SANAD aims at enhancing the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in palliative and hospice care and support them adopt a palliative care approach in their practice. Training and workshops are comprehensive covering all aspects in palliative and hospice care. This type of projects also includes training and workshops that solely focus on mental health in palliative care; a new field in palliative care, and directed towards healthcare professionals from different disciplines.

    Capacity Building

    Quality Improvement & Research

    Through this type of projects, SANAD aims at assessing and improving the quality of its hospice care through developing and implementing projects guided by the science of healthcare quality improvement. In addition SANAD aims at and generates knowledge in palliative and hospice care that is relevant to the Lebanese and Arabic context and culture through research projects that can help inform palliative/hospice care practices, policies and advocacy efforts.

    AWARENESS, OUTREACH & FUNDRAISING

    As a non-profit organization, SANAD relies mostly on fundraising programs and activities to sustain and expand its provision of hospice care support services across Lebanon. The central role of the Fundraising Unit is to continuously provide financial resources to fund the organization’s operations and ensure its growth and sustainability.
